I tried a newer Schiit BiFrost and still found my older V Dac better in some ways. The less expensive MF Dacs are smooth sounding and again, not that much used. Also have a Luxman L 215 integrated, another gem, a bit older ( mid '80's ) but has that signature Luxman sound that many appreciate. I am always amazed at just how musical it is. It even has pre outs which is a nice feature. The Luxman R series ( R 113 and 115 ) are great sounding receivers and again, not much money - my R 113 is still going strong ( paid 50.00 ) and they get plenty of praise here. Well, there are any number of combinations out there within your budget - I use a Musical Fidelity V Dac with an older Pioneer Elite DV 37 or Pioneer 2800 / 2910 players ( all dvd ) and Sony ( ES ) as well as Toshiba make some nice units that are great as transports and they can be had for very little considering they were closing in on 1000.00 when new.
